Junior SQL Developer

A leading E-commerce retailer based in the Portsmouth area is seeking a Junior SQL Developer to join a busy IT Operations Department.

This is the perfect opportunity for someone who is looking to further develop their career within SQL Development.

As a Junior SQL Developer you will be assisting with technical support across a variety of business applications and integrations as well as supporting the Data Team.

The Junior SQL Developer will;

  • Provide technical support and guidance of applications, data processes, Business Intelligence services and databases
  • Act as an escalation point from the IT Service Desk for all Application Support and specific Data / Business Intelligence incidents, in-turn escalating as needed.
  • Provide out-of-hours support during Peak trading periods and occasionally throughout the year, as required
  • Retain ownership of support requests you receive through to their resolution, working with colleagues and third-parties as required
  • Provide excellent customer service, in-person, on the phone and over email & instant messaging
  • Perform regular proactive checks of key processes and data movements to provide early warning to potential problems
  • Provide project support where required to assist the team delivering change to the business
  • Ensure IT customers are kept up-to-date on the status of all requests
  • Develop a detailed technical and functional understanding of company line-of-business applications & integrations and how they align to business processes
  • Work closely with IT colleagues in all technical disciplines to share knowledge, ensure consistency and improve service levels in all IT disciplines
  • Work with third-party service providers, or application vendors, as-required to support your role
  • Create and maintain high quality documentation and information
  • Provide support for business change initiatives as required
  • Help troubleshoot application and data-related incidents and problems, using your logic and analytical skills to identify the root cause of a problem
  • Contribute to the creation and maintenance of IT processes and procedures, looking for opportunities to improve them on an ongoing basis
  • Assist in the creation and modification of reports, and the ongoing support of them
  • Contribute towards testing of software updates, changes, bug fixes, new processes and new development releases

The successful Junior SQL Developer will have;

  • At least two years' experience in a technical IT Support role
  • Analytical, a natural problem solver, able to find patterns and trends in data and support incidents
  • Keen to learn and develop your technical skills, through self-study, on-the-job and formal training
  • Good telephone manner, staying calm under pressure or in difficult situations
  • Experience of enterprise software, databases, data models
  • Determined, persistent and proactive. Keen to understand, analyse and improve.
  • Experience of common data reporting and analysis tools, including SQL Reporting Services (SSRS), Excel with external data connections, and VBA Macros
  • Experience of Microsoft SQL server and T-SQL
  • A quick learner, able to ask the right questions to further your knowledge
  • Experience of Business Intelligence services and data integration processes (ETL)
  • Knowledge of data models, data processing, coding languages and software design
  • A general understanding of retail, the high street and how IT supports a retail organisation
  • Knowledge of databases, database queries and how to extract or report on multiple disparate sources of data
  • Able to effectively prioritise work, with an understanding of business priority and impact
  • Knowledge of Business Intelligence technology, such as SQL Reporting Services and Analysis Cubes
  • A team player, able to build relationships and work well in a team
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

The role of Junior SQL Developer is paying between £30,000 - £35,000 plus benefits.
