Senior Developer
- £60000 - £85000 per annum + 25 days holiday,
- Southampton, Hampshire
- Permanent
When a single customer can generate 40,000 orders in a day, reliability is not just an engineering goal. It is essential to keeping a business running.
This is an opportunity to work on a highly available integration platform that connects eCommerce systems with warehouse operations, processing orders, stock movements and shipments in real time.
The platform operates at 99.999% availability and has been tested to handle three million orders per day. You will help develop the next generation of services and tools while maintaining that level of reliability.
Senior Developer (Node.js / TypeScript)
Southampton, Hampshire
Up to £85,000
Hybrid: 2 days per week in the office (Tuesday and Thursday)
Permanent
The opportunity
You will join a collaborative engineering team responsible for designing, developing and operating a platform built around distributed services.
The role is approximately 75% backend development, working primarily with Node.js and TypeScript, alongside some React frontend development.
You will have genuine ownership of your work, from initial design and development through to deployment and production performance.
Current projects include:
- Developing new integrations and services connecting customer platforms with warehouse systems.
- Improving reliability, monitoring and recovery across distributed systems.
- Building self-service tools that make integrations easier to configure and manage.
- Introducing Go where performance requirements justify it.
- Contributing to infrastructure, architecture and technical decisions.
The team operates with considerable autonomy, without unnecessary approval processes or layers of management. Developers are trusted to make sensible technical decisions and take responsibility for what they deliver.
What we're looking for
The two key requirements are:
- Strong commercial backend development experience with Node.js.
- Experience designing and developing distributed systems, ideally involving APIs, event-driven architecture and asynchronous processing.
Experience with TypeScript is highly desirable, but not essential.
The wider technology environment includes NestJS, Google Cloud, Pub/Sub, MongoDB, Redis, Terraform, GitHub Actions and Datadog. Experience with some of these would be useful, but you are not expected to know everything
Knowledge of React, Go or Site Reliability Engineering would also be beneficial.
The team actively uses AI-assisted development tools. You don't need extensive experience with them, but you should be interested in exploring how they can improve development while maintaining good engineering standards.
Above all, you should enjoy solving technical problems, taking ownership and collaborating with other developers.
Benefits
- 25 days' holiday plus bank holidays, with the option to buy or sell holiday.
- An additional half-day of birthday leave.
- Pension, life assurance and Healthshield Cash Plan.
- Enhanced maternity and paternity pay.
- Employee assistance programme and wellbeing support.
- Discount schemes, cycle-to-work scheme and employee recognition awards.
If you enjoy backend engineering, solving distributed systems challenges and having the freedom to influence how software is built, this is an opportunity worth exploring.
