Technical Lead Engineer | Tech for Good

Want to stay hands-on while helping a team build technology that makes a meaningful difference?

We're recruiting a Technical Lead Engineer for a tech for good business developing software for the care sector. This is an opportunity to combine technical leadership, practical engineering and a clear social purpose.

We're looking for someone who enjoys solving complex problems, making sound architectural decisions and supporting other engineers to do their best work. You'll be comfortable moving between writing code, discussing product priorities and improving how software gets delivered.

The role

  • Lead technical delivery from initial design through development, release and ongoing operation.
  • Stay hands-on with coding, architecture and code reviews.
  • Help evolve the platform, balancing new features with reliability, maintainability and technical debt.
  • Coach engineers and encourage a collaborative approach to problem-solving.
  • Work closely with product and business stakeholders to turn user needs into practical technical solutions.
  • Improve development workflows, automated testing, deployment processes and monitoring.
  • Bring clear thinking to technical decisions, explaining trade-offs to technical and non-technical colleagues.

What you'll bring

  • Experience as a Technical Lead, Lead Engineer or Senior Engineer with significant technical ownership.
  • Strong hands-on development skills with JavaScript/TypeScript and Node.js.
  • Experience building APIs, backend services and cloud-based applications.
  • Familiarity with modern frontend frameworks such as React or Vue.
  • A solid understanding of system design, databases, performance and scalability.
  • Experience with cloud infrastructure, ideally AWS, alongside CI/CD and production monitoring.
  • A track record of improving existing systems while continuing to deliver useful features.
  • An approachable leadership style, with experience mentoring engineers and working across teams.

Experience modernising platforms, building event-driven systems or supporting distributed engineering teams would also be valuable. Previous care-sector experience isn't essential; an interest in building useful technology with a positive impact is.

Why consider it?

  • £100,000 - £110,000 plus benefits
  • Hybrid working, with two days per week in London
  • The opportunity to help shape technical direction while staying close to the code.
  • Work on a product with a purpose: supporting the people who deliver care.
